Upon detection
Detection of what?

What leads you to the idea that avast is guilty for this...? Anyway, try booting to safe mode (keep pressing F8 at system boot to access the boot menu, and then choose 'Safe Mode').

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

What Operating System do you use? If i remember correctly, that virus only infects/work under windows95. So if you have Win98/ME/Nt it could be possible that you are not able to start again. If you use still FAT/FAT32 Bootpartition you can boot to dos(or use a bootdisk) and replace the infected files with the orginals or use a DOS Scanner. If you have NTFS Partitions you can ask for Avasts Bart CD!;) Does Avast still have a Version for Dos?
Otherwise you can try F-prot/DOS from
