About the leak tests limitations: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=29259.msg247460#msg247460

DavidR:
Yes, like all tests there will be limitations, and that is only one aspect of the firewall but a relatively important one denying malware that managed to get past your security access to the internet to download more of the same or worse.

Igor's point about inbound protection:

--- Quote from: igor ---The primary goal of a firewall is to keep hackers out of your system, that is, prevent INBOUND attacks in the first place.
--- End quote ---

You only have to browse these forums and see just how easy it is for drive by infection to get on to your system and the firewall never batted an eyelid, it just sailed right through. Why, because that is also a flaw in firewall protection, you the user link to a web site, your firewall is expecting an associated inbound response to that connection.

So it treats it as a user requested download, so bingo the malware is through the firewall and now you are reliant on your other security software to catch the malware, but if that doesn't catch it you are reliant on outbound protection, as you can see it can snowball very quickly.

So there really is no easy way to test inbound blocking other than the usual ShieldsUp or other port scanning tools, but Outbound, Firewall Leak tests are also required so we can't just say they are unnecessary or redundant or not very useful in the real world.

It is there as a guide something that is abysmal at blocking leaks wouldn't fill me with confidence about its abilities in blocking inbound attack.
