Check your system date (double click the clock) ensure the day, month and year are correct, adjust as required.

OK right click the avast 'a' icon, select Updating, Program Update.

That will a) check the Program and b) the iAVS (virus signatures) are up to date.

Where did you download the program from ?
It is possible that it isn't the latest version or the signature file was more than 7 days old.

If every thing is reported as up to date, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Did you have any other antivirus in this computer in the past?
How did you uninstall it?

Maybe this helps too:

Is ashServ.exe running in your computer? Is there a red cross in avast icon on system tray? Did you have any other antivirus in  this computer in the past?

Hi Tech,,
No red cross,
Had nod32 on which has just run out, uninstalled and also went to programs and deleted the folder.

No red cross,
Seems avast is running, the problem is only on WSC.
When and if you feel comfortable, we can guide you to that steps to have it working back.

Suporte técnico, bom dia.

Tenho uma situação muito similar à descrita pelo Ned, ou seja, adquiri o produto "avast! 4 Professional Edition, 1 year" no dia 25.12.08 e mesmo colocando / digitando minha licença, o escudo vermelho me é mostrado.

A opção em desacordo é a "Proteção contra malware". Mesmo clicando no botão "Atualizar agora" (o que leva em torno de 05 segundos), continuo com o escudo vermelho aparecendo.

Tenho instado o Windows XP.

Vocês podem me ajudar, por favor?
Quais são os riscos que estou correndo?

Obrigado e no aguardo,
RLLMACEDO

rllmacedo, this is an English only support forum...
Anyway, I could ask you:
Which other antivirus do you have in this machine? Did you have any in the past? How did you remove it?
See the tutorial:  http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm
Please take a look here: http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-invalid-license-number.html

Can you follow in English?
