« on: January 20, 2009, 03:24:47 PM »
I also get an error telling me that my mail isn't protected.  This is a brand new laptop.  I don't understand where to find proxy settings so if I need to change them I need help doing that.  Thank you!  Jill

With Windows XP you don't have to change anything. The email scanning is automatic, transparent.
Which is your email server? Hotmail? Yahoo? GMail?

It's through my work.  I don't use email on this computer, but I can't connect to get the new download updated.

This error can be as a result of having another AV on your system or remnants of one that would be conflicting with avast.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

New systems frequently come installed with a trial or limited duration subscription to an AV.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

So, consider avast Pro version.

thanks!  It must have been the preinstalled software.

Which one? Norton? McAfee?

1) Remove NAV or Norton 360 through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me. Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.

This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.

If you need, you can find many free versions of these registry cleaners here:

Sometimes, McAfee won't be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its "Uninstall Application" if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).
