What ports and protocol using Avast! for updates?
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:54:11 PM »
I looking for this all manuals and FAQ, online and offline, and not found answer. In technical support there are not email or ICQ number. Why? It it more quickly and easier.
Excuse for my bad english, I am russian.

In home net I install firewall "NetworkShield" and to one computer I disable HTTP-access (port 80). How can it upgrade Avast! without enabling port 80 for all programs? What ports and IP-adresses Avast! used? I can indicate any IP:port for source (behind NAT) and recipient, but don`t know what ones. When Avast! try to connect, it cicle ports ascending and recive answers with other ports, then described in HELPs.

It is possible to organize this scheme of interaction?

Technical support by email: support@avast.com
avast! User Manual

Network Shield is not a firewall, avast is only an antivirus, not a suite.

only an antivirus, very good antivirus and let`s will so

How with Avast! goes through NAT without enabling port 80 for all programs? Is IP of site-download-bases secret?

I believe Tech misunderstood your post - because there's a part of avast! called "Network Shield" as well.

The IP addresses are not secret - it's just that there is quite a lot of them, and the list keeps changing. They are listed (in quite an understandable format - it's always the "url=" key) in the file <avast4>\Setup\servers.def

As for the protocol, I think it's an ordinary HTTP download...

Thanks, that looks like the solve of problem
Little question: Avast! takes IP from this list randomly or orderly begins first? In other words, if I indicate first 10 adresses upgrade will be correctly? And if number of IP-ports is varios, increasing ascending, What ports range (interval) is recomended or optimal?
Beforehand am I grateful for concern
