Hi
I have used Avast (free) for around three years but now i would like to try Avast Pro, so my question is do i uninstall Avast free before installing Avast Pro ?, any help appreciated

No. Just put the new Avast Pro key in the licence key field and avast will download the necessary files to run Avast Pro.

Hope I'm not sounding to thick here but what is the difference between Avast Free and Pro ? (please don't get me wrong i have paid for Pro and I'm happy with it)

The Pro version is much more configurable as it has the Enhanced User Interface, where you can set-up scheduled scans, setup automated action/s to take should something be detected rather than the interactive requirements of the home version.

If you open the Simple User Interface, where you would do on-demand scans, find the Menu icon or right click on the middle of the skin and from the list select Enhanced User Interface.

Because we are all different
I don't like white as a background colour (too bright) so I change my Windows Display properties (not a difference in avast).
