Win32:Trojan-gen {other} I need to get rid of it
« on: November 09, 2008, 06:44:39 AM »
I just realized that I've had this for awhile now. It just started to act real bad this past week. I've read other post about this and tried to follow similar steps to getting rid of this as far as I could. I've ran vundo, rootkit, and the ccleaner and I still have it on my comp.  I've downloaded hijack and have ran a scan. Here are the results:

When I run avast it keeps picking up this virus in temp folders and in my systems restore. I've even tried disabling systems restore and running the scan but it never seems to clear all of it.

Can someone help me please!

Hi dboi65,

You seem to have several different spyware infections.

First try a boot time scan with avast! Right click the scanner screen, select 'schedule a boot time scan' and reboot when requested. (Or open the tab at the top left of the scanner screen and select the boot time option from there.)

Try the usual free adware/spyware scanners.

Ad-Aware Free
Spybot Search & Destroy
SUPERAntiSpyware Free
a-Squared Free
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Download, install and update the programs. Disconnect from the internet (pull the plug) before running scans.

Always select the option to quarantine any malware found rather than delete it, then you will be able to restore files or registry entries wrongly identified as malware- a rare but not unknown event for any malware scanner.

I see you have the karna.dat thing; somebody posted a solution recently:

Ok I've ran reg cure and Ad-Aware and the adware program found a lot of infections and quarantined them. The reg cure fixed only 2 things but I will be able to fix the rest once I purchase the full version. I have another log file that I would like for you to look at and tell me if there is anything strange that you can spot. Some of the things I know that reg cure can fix once I purchase it but I want to see if there is anything else that might need to be fixed by other programs.

Do not purchase Regcure (it has a very poor reputation): download the free scanners I linked to earlier: they will remove the malware on your computer for free.

If you really like any of those you can buy the paid version with my blessing, but Regcure is a scam.

@ dboi65
I see that you ran HJT in safe mode (both logs), this could well exclude some entries and I see at a glance virtually all of those that CharleyO took the time to report and said you should fix that are still there

Just some for example:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CCD394D2-CE20-4D06-8D8D-2C62713BE63E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awttsSMG.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - C:\Program Files\PeoplePC\Toolbar\PPCToolbar.dll
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: karna.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: qoMccCuv - qoMccCuv.dll (file missing)

If you aren't going to fix those in HJT then it little point in posting the logs and is wasting CharleyO's time.

Fix in HJT (see below)
####
Run HJT again in normal mode (close any other windows except HJT), tick the box to the left of the suspect entry you wish to fix, click the Fix Selected Button.

I'm having similar issues. I've ran a boot scan with Avast and found that windows\system32\vtuoldex.dll file was infected by Win32:Trojan-gen (other). When I tried to move to chest, I received an error message: Error 0xC0000034. I could not repair it & I could not move it. I just selected "ignore" in order to contine the scan. Now my PC freezes some times during Windows boot up. I was able to boot and now I'm getting an Avast warning of a Malware name: Win32:Crypt-DDH [tri]. When I tried to move to chest, an Avast message comes up that says, "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. The file is C:Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\UQV4L9UT\index[1].

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here is my HijackThis log...

Ok. I did check the links he sent me and thats how I downloaded some of the free adware and regcure to run scans. Those entries that you said that I needed to fix, he sent me a link to someone's topic that had the same problem that had a solution to that but when I tried to fix it the way they informed it didn't work. I wouldn't waste his time if he takes the time to try to help me. I wasn't told to have HJT fix those entries to I didn't know. But I have just done this and I saved a logfile in normal mode.

Thanks for the information about RegCure. It told me that I had alot of problems but if you say it's no good then I will find another way to fix those. But I have gave a logfile in normal mode and fixed the entries that were stated before this. What should I do from this point?

Nobody here would recommend Regcure: it's possible you saw a pop-up fro this program generated by spyware.

The Karna.dat entry has gone, so it looks like you did something right, but I can't see any evidence that you have followed the advice you were originally given.

Please run the scanners recommended here:

« Reply #12 on: February 04, 2009, 03:08:31 AM »
i have researched this topic for awhile i will plan to move to foxit but need conformation on this?

i was running a thorgoh scan today with archives turned on and Avast said i had gotten a "Win32: Trojan-Gen" under adobe installer so i naturally deleted the files (which before i read this topic knew keeping the virus in a vault for awile is wise) but in my atempt to delete them i got an error so i tried to move to chest it wouldn't let me do that either so im like ok ill do a boot scan and wipe the sucker out the same thing happened.

i hope yall can read those scrshots

this is my avast log of the files

The first thing I would do (outside of any detection considerations) is uninstall this C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0 as version 8 is vulnerable and these vulnerabilities are being exploited and start using either the latest version of Adobe Reader or FoxIt.

Uninstalling would also have the dual effect of ridding your system of the file even if it proves to be a good detection or an FP. So I see that as a win win situation.
