Avast 4.8 won't load on an XP machine
« on: February 06, 2009, 03:42:02 AM »
Granted it used to be a Win98 machine and has limited memory (88mb) and a slow processor (445mhz or so), but has plenty of disk space and seems to meet the requirements.  But it fails every time at the download "VPS" part, which appears to be right near the end of the install.  Zooms right along until then.  Any thoughts?

Hi...

Well, one thought immediately came to mind: Increase the amount of memory! :)

What AV program did you use previously and how did you go about uninstalling it?

May God Bless you! :)

I have to wonder whether this is entirely sound advice.

How old is this system?  Given the apparent age of the processor it may well have a very limited capacity for memory upgrade too.  As noted in another similar thread ... the limitations on available memory may well be key to getting avast to install the VPS file.  You may want to try to look at limiting the other startup programs and services on the system to make more memory available for the avast install process.

This memory level for an XP system must be considered borderline at best. As a backup, test and server system I have a 9 year old 1GHz processor that was really limping along with 256Mb on XP until I upgraded to 512Mb (the maximum permitted on that system).  In such circumstances available disk space is irrelevant.

It may make more sense to put the money that would go for a memory upgrade toward a newer system that is likely to have a longer life and usefulness.

88MB is an unusual amount. Is it 96MB less 8MB shared fior graphics buffer?

XP will be painfully slow with any on-access AV scanner unless you increase it to 256MB or more. Then it will just be very slow.  ;)
