I was caught out by a scam when i first registered with avast.....I paid money to be registered when in fact it should have been free.  I subsequently tried to get my money back via my credit card but was unsuccessful. However I have been using avast now for about 18 months and have received a message saying my registration has expired and invitiing me to subscribe to avast professional and outlining the fees.  I just want to know that this is legitimate and do i need 'professional' avast.....as you can probably tell i am a home user. thanks

You don't need to upgrade to the Pro version, just get a new key (for free) for the Home version from here:
