On Access Scanner
« on: February 06, 2009, 05:35:11 PM »
:-\Working away at this and am so completely satisfied with my Avast home edition 4.8 and using Windows XP programme.  Question.......  When I hold my mouse over the icon in the system tray, lower right hand corner, a message comes up that says "7 providers total, 6 running".  Can you tell me what that means?  Also, why not "7 running"?  I've read over the HELP section and it doesn't seem to answer this question.  However, I'm sure its covered somewhere.  Thanks for your time.  Regards, Beth

avast uses different protection methods for different tasks, these are termed Providers/Shields.

In all there are 7 commonly only 6 will be active (running) the 7th is commonly the Outlook/Exchange Provider that is only started if you have MS Outlook (not express) installed.

The avast Help file lists all the Resident Providers and what they do.

Is MS Outlook running when you see only 6 of 7 shields running ?

If not, that is what it will be waiting for.
If so check that the plug-in isn't disabled in MS Outlook:
Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-ins > Manage Disabled items.
Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.
