Can't update / Can't open Avast.com
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:09:50 PM »
Hello,
I have just installed Avast Home on a new laptop (removed AVG free). Two instances of one trojan were detected during initial boot scan (I don't remember the name). The program will not update (cannot connect to server), and no address that has "avast" in the name will open - any other websites open normally.
I downloaded the latest version of the Home edition (from my PC), 4.8.1335.0 and installed that one on the laptop (removed the previous one, 4.8.12...). The virus definitions are dated May 2008.
No idea what's going on... could it be the virus wasn't cleaned and is blocking access to the avast site (just tried the eset.com site, the free.avg.com site, kasperski.com - won't open these either)?
What shall I do?
I hope you can help me!

Maybe you could test http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=42709.msg357857#msg357857
After you clean, maybe an avast installation from the scratch.

Thanks.
I first ran a thorough scan using Avast in Safe Mode - nothing.
Then ran a quick scan using Malwarebytes-Anti-Malvare and it found one registry infection. Deleted it.
Avast will still NOT upgrade and the website(s) will still not open...
Obviously the virus is trying to "jump" to my PC because every time I insert my flash drive I get a message that some file in Recycler could not start (see screenshot)

Here is the Hijackthis report:
