Avast Update Announcement
« on: February 23, 2009, 04:41:39 AM »
Every time Avast does an update, it displays a little blue popup on my screen with a voice saying that it has just updated.  Well, good for it.  But bad for me.

I don't like being interrupted when I'm working.  My wife knows it, my kids know it, and Avast should know it.

How do I turn this announcement thingy OFF?

TIA.

Hi...

I'm not sure about the popups but to disable the sound effects, bring up the avast main window, click on "Settings" and then click on "Sounds." Click the box "Disable avast sounds," then click "OK" and you should be set. :)

May God Bless you! :)

and arguably very many more of us like the reassurance of that popup.

Nevertheless, your system, your right and your choice ... unless the day (I hope it won't) comes that you need to post here to complain that your updates stopped and you did not know it had happened.

By the way, I think that disabling avast sounds will also not disturb you (other than visually) when avast detects a virus in any of its scanner functions ... not that I wish to disturb you.

There is option for disabling this. Just open Settings, go to Updating section, select Advanced or Cuistomize, not sue exactly and here you'll be able to turn it of completelly (popup and sound together).
I'm not sure exactly because i'm at work but it's there somewhere.

The section that is supposed to control this is:

avast Program settings > Update Basic > Details

Selecting the mode "Silent" should turn off the sound for the update process only.  The previous instructions as I reported turn off all audible avast warnings.  This is the first best step ... though recently one user posted that this seemed not to work.  If you choose to try this path please let us know if it works for you.

-= I'm just annoyed by the slow down of my computer every startup due to the updates.. Still, to make sure, I manually update every time i have a spare time to do so [like bathroom break or dinner time] moreover, I perform thorough scan before i go to school..

You're working with avast... not a common antivirus ;)
To delay the update of avast into a permanent internet connection (DSL) you can change the value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds into avast4.ini file. Details on 'Settings' in my signature or http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647

alanrf's suggestion:

"avast Program settings > Update Basic > Details  Selecting the mode "Silent" should turn off the sound for the update process only."

seems to do the trick.  If I later find out otherwise, I'll post it here.

Thanks to all.  This is a great forum!!

BTW, I'm using the free trial right now.  Baring any unpleasant surprises, I'll be purchasing the Pro version when the trial period runs out.  This will replace my paid versions of AVG8 and SpySweeper.  :-*

Nope this does not work. I had it that way, the voice still popped up.
seems lots of people are looking for this solution. too bad avast doesn't make it SIMPLE.
Here is what I found that I think will work

To turn off the voice and the blue screen (but still get automatic updates):

To turn off the voice:

*Right click the blue a ball
*single click " sounds"
*click "settings"
* in the program even box (the white box), scroll down till you see "Automatic VPS update".
* click on "Automatic VPS update" and click on the upside down arrow next to the white box under "Sounds:"
*scroll up and click on "(none)" and when you see a pop-up windows, click "yes" and click "OK".

(Note: check marking "disable avast! sounds" will disable all the sounds of avast! including the warning sound when avast! detects a virus)

To turn off the blue sign:

*click on "Update (Basic)"
*click on "Details"
*un-check "Show sliding box after automatic update"
*click "OK"
* now click "OK" to close the window and you're all set.

Now if you wanted to disable automatic updates (it'll also disable the sound and the blue sign), in program setting, just click Update(Basic). In the "Virus Database" area, select "Manual" and click "OK".
