Hi guys Im new to avast and wondering if you could help me with a little problem.  By the way sorry for the long title.  I brought a new laptop yesterday with windows vista installed since my mac died and needed to install some anti virus protection and a friend of mine recommended Avast to me since I only ever used AVG before.

After downloading the Avast 4.8 home my windows security alerts told me my virus protection is out of date.  However after updating Avast it says its up to date.

Im not a techie and just wondered if anyone could tell me what is wrong

Thanks for the help.

Much appreciated

Check the system date (double click the clock at the bottom right of the monitor) and adjust as required, especially the day/month/year.

You may also want to ensure there are no remnants of AVG incase that might have any impact on the WSC.
AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Hi mate thanks for the reply

It is a new laptop which only came with mcafee trial anti virus so i downloaded the avast home after uninstalling the mcafee.

I will try the date thing as I just noticed the date is set to 4th march.

Hopefully this works

But was the year correct also as correcting the date should have resolved the problem.

Try a reboot after correcting the system date.

If no change try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Sometimes, Windows Security Center stop recognizing your antivirus or firewall...
So, after you check your system time and date, see if this helps.
