Unhandled exceptions

Hi,

I am a new user of Avast home (free version) and I have noticed in the warning section of the log view a number of entries like this:

2/28/2009 3:15:50 PM   SYSTEM   1388   AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: unhandled exception!, 7C3A497A. 
2/28/2009 3:16:01 PM   SYSTEM   1388   AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: unhandled exception!, 7C3A497A. 
2/28/2009 3:16:11 PM   SYSTEM   1388   AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: unhandled exception!, 7C3A497A. 
2/28/2009 3:16:22 PM   SYSTEM   1388   AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: unhandled exception!, 7C3A497A.

I also read this previous thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=42597.0 and I did see files such as unp12225831.tmp.mdmp.

I installed avast 4.8 on 2/22/09 and started receiving these warnings the next day.  What should I do?

I won't worry with that warnings... verbose of the logs...

Check the folder <avast>\data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX (where XXXX is a random number) or *.mdmp there?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

tatergirl, how much (RAM) memory do you have in the computer?

1 GB. I did as requested in the post by Tech and sent the files.

Hi tatergirl,

I have to say that the dump files you sent to us are very interesting.
A couple of questions:

- how many entries (roughly) of this type are there in the log file? (is it tens, hundreds, thousands etc.)
- have you sent us all the .mdmp files you had, or were there more of these? (I don't need any more of them, I'm just asking)
- I suppose the problem only happen if the Web Shield provider in avast is enabled and running. Can you please confirm? (e.g. pause it and see if that "resolves" the issue).

It only occurs when web surfing and it is related to flash movies.

As Tech asked - do you have any recent .mdmp files in <avast>\Data\Log? If yes, can you send them?

The files are on the way. Over 13,000K. I hope this works. If it doesn't I'll break up the email into smaller portions.

Edit: I presume it is safe to delete these files?

Dang! Cannot be deleted. Access is denied.

Panic over. They can be deleted if the self defense module is stopped.

I noticed the same problem here. I found 110 of those unpxxxx.tmp.mdmp files (8,8 MB). Starting on May 4th 2007 until today. Since Feb. 10th 2009 with a size of 0 KB and from Feb.11th with ~350 KB. If I also should send some of them, please let me know. The flood of windows event manager messages "AAVM scanning error ..." began also at Feb. 11th 2009.

Sorry, I made a mistake : not "since Feb. 10th 2009" correct is "until Feb. 10th 2009"

You can follow reply #1 above or just try to repair your avast installation and forget that... deleting the temporary and dump files.

I have the same problem....for a long time.  I am not that computer savy to know if these were temp files and then I dumped them or not.  I didn't follow the statement of   forget that..."deleting the emporary and dump files"

I have been having lots of application hangups.  I am running WindowsXP SP2 with 1GB of memory.

I notice I have been getting a lot today and few days prior.

I made a zip file and will send it along with a link to this post.

Here's my feedback, I made the following steps:

1) stopped the self defense module of Avast! (settings - error handling)
2) deleted all "unpxxxx.tmp.mdmp" files from C:\programs\Alwil software\avast4\data\log
3) opened control panel / software
4) scrolled to Avast! Antivirus and clicked the "change/remove" tab
5) scrolled down and choosed "repair"
6) rebooted computer after successful repair-procedure

Result: No more event-manager messages since yesterday 12:03, it seems to work this way.

@ starbright57: try this (make an restore point before to be on the safe side), you do not have to be an expert for this procedure - good luck!
