Internet Mail Provider problem
« on: March 05, 2009, 09:18:28 AM »
I'm running Win XP SP3, using Avast 4 Home, Comodo firewall,
and Outlook Express 6.
This combination has worked well for months with no problems.
Recently I've started having problems with the Avast Internet Mail Provider.
It blocks the downloading of message bodies.

I use an IMAP account. I normally just download the headers,
and only get the message body when I start to read the message.
I can download the headers, delete and purge messages with no problem.
When I try to read a message, Outlook Express displays this message:

Message could not be displayed
Outlook Express encountered an unexpected problem while
displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory
or low disk space and try again.

I also tried Mozilla Thunderbird, and it could not
download the message bodies either.

Similarly, I cannot download the body of Newsgroup (NNTP)
messages using Outlook Express or XNews.

Turning off the firewall does not help.

I have found 2 ways to get it the message bodies:

1. Terminating the Internet Mail Provider allows messages to
go through, but of course does not provide protection.
Pausing the provider is not good enough. Must use Terminate.

2. Open the Internet Mail Provider Custom properties.
Uncheck the "Scan" box for IMAP (or NNTP).
Save the settings and close the Provider window.
Open it again, Check the "Scan" box, save.
Somehow this sequence seems to reset something,
and allows everything to work normally.

I just uninstalled Avast, used aswclear.exe to make sure
the uninstall was complete, re-installed it, and made sure
I have the latest updates.
That did not help.

This is getting very annoying.
Does anyone have any idea why the Internet Mail Provider
is blocking the download of message bodies ?

Thanks,
