« on: March 15, 2009, 01:30:45 AM »
Hey guys when I rightclick on the avast! Simple User Interface me Schedule Boot-Time Scan... is all grayed out so I cannot select it.  Why is this and how do I change it?

I have included some pics which show the About screen to see what version I have then the screen showing it grayed out.

Welcome to the forums, n00b78753.   :)

What is the OS?

If it is Vista 64 bit, then boot time scan is not available at this time.

The boot-time scan isn't available on 64bit OSes.

I believe they are trying to find a way to do this, I don't know if the problem is the additional security of the 64bit OS that is the problem, just that it currently isn't available.

It is one of the problems with 64bit OSes there are much less in the way of programs that support it, but it is getting better slowly. Fortunately avast works on it but that one function which works on the 32bit versions of windows doesn't work on the 64bit version.

Even though XP 64bit has been on the scene for some time the software companies just don't see the value in developing 64bit versions or getting it to work with the 64bit OS, as I guess the number of customers is low.

That problem is however, not the fault of MS the 64bit OSes have been out for some time. There will be many people on this forum will find it strange me defending M$. Part of that problem is that when people buy new systems and an OS they may not receive the best advice on what flavour of windows XP/Vista, 32bit or 64bit version from the retailer.

Yeah thats dead on.  I didnt know the compatibility issues that x64 had.  Its really just been a nightmare.  So do you know when Avast is going to fix this for us?

I don't know, I'm just an avast user like yourself, but I know if it were a simple matter they would have already done it.

avast is the only AV that I know of that even does this for 32bit OSes. Since 64bit OSes are meant to be more secure they would be trying to prevent this type of thing as theoretically it could be malware and not a security program.

You can however run a scan from safe mode if needs be, not as good as a boot-time scan but better than a normal mode scan if there is a problem dealing with a detection in normal mode.
What was it that you wanted to do a boot-time scan for ?
