Avast DLL Error, Unable to terminate.
« on: March 10, 2009, 05:00:10 AM »
I've recently been having some trouble with my Avast! Home installation.

First things first, my system specs:

Vista Home Premium 64-bit
6GB RAM
Core2 Quad q6600 @ 2.93 ghz
(I've had this box for about six months and have had no errors, and have not had any errors from overclocking my cpu)

Now, about two hours ago i noticed the little avast icon was sitting in my system tray, frozen. Clicking it does NOTHING. so i decided to boot it via the start menu and got this:

So i figured, okay, somehow my installation is corrupt. I decided to "repair" it via the control panel options.
Repairing worked perfectly, but my problem still wasn't fixed. I decided to simply uninstall and reinstall avast, figuring there was some error with it patching. I selected "uninstall" and first i got this:

and then this:

so finally i decided to just delete the install folder and reinstall. However, it says i lack sufficient permissions to delete the folder, when in fact i have modified it before!

Edit: Not only that, but i cant even kill the frozen process

For some more information, yes this is a legal copy of Vista. I have all drivers etc updated and i do not believe i have a virus (as avast on-access would probably have detected it :D)
I am sure this is a simple problem, but i would like my virus protection to work again.

Thanks, Artuu Suuntala.
(also, sorry if my english isn't the greatest)

Welcome to the forums, ghermination.   :)

I guess it would be best to start anew.

1 - write down your avast activation key for use later.

2 - download a new copy of avast Home ... http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

3- download the avast! uninstall utility, aswClear.exe ... http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

4- disconnect from the internet so your computer will not be online and unprotected while you do this.

5 - Start Windows in Safe Mode

6 - Open (execute) the uninstall utility

7 - If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)

8 - Click REMOVE

9 - Restart your computer

10 - Install the new copy of avast that you downloaded above.

Let us know if you need more help.
