Will IE8 and Avast 4.xHome be compatible?
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:32:24 AM »
Good evening,

Just trying to determine if anyone using Avast 4.x Home is having any problems with the new IE8 before I take the plunge and install it?

Thanks and regards,

They are as fart as those who were testing the beta and RC versions without problem.

However, Tech had a problem installing on XP, cause him a lot of grief.

You might also be advised to wait as there is already a (day 1) vulnerability exposed and waiting a security update.

Hi DavidR,

I appreciate the fast and informative response.

I am just trying to line up all my "p's and q's" (making sure all my security programs will work) before I eventually take the plunge.

As you suggested I will be content to wait awhile longer before giving it a shot.  Sounds like there are a few hang-ups with folks using Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster too.  Something to do with having the immunizations enabled in both of them is slowing IE8 loading to a crawl.

Sounds like I had better take a wait and see approach as you recommend.

It is good to know that Avast and IE8 will play nice together for future reference.  But like Tech,  I too am using WinXP and I don't need anything right now that will cause my almost 67-year-old 'brain housing group' any more problems than necessary....lol

Have a great weekend!

Thanks and regards,

I have been using Avast (pro) with IE8 on both Windows 7 and Vista with no problems.

avast cannot tell the difference between IE8 and IE7.  avast works (exactly the same in all the currently supported Windows operating systems) by intercepting the http calls of the browser not the browser program itself.

This evening ... just by way of testing ... I installed IE8 on one of my Win XP Pro SP3 systems.  No problems in installing, though it did report that an IE add-on (part of my CD burning software) would not work with IE8 and needs to be permanently disabled.  This is not an issue for me since I am not aware that it has ever been used.

Other than that it seems to be working just fine in the check out I have given it and avast is scanning its accesses without any issues.

However, having kicked the tires I will now return it to the dealership while they that niggling little first day (or so) security breach.

alanrf,

I appreciate the further update and the results of your own testing.

As promised, MS did fix the rendering of pages at a DPI=120 for my 22 inch monitor.  With IE7and Vista, I had to squint to read any board. If I used 125%, I had to horizontally scroll. IE8 renders the page at 125% without having to scroll. FF always did this.

I will never go back to IE7.

Get a bigger monitor ;D I just treated myself to a 26" wide-screen TFT 1920x1200 massive screen real estate and no need to scroll horizontally, took a little time getting used to it. I changed some of the Display Properties, mainly some of the font sizes, so I don't adjust Display Properties, Settings tab, Advanced, DPI setting which I have set at Normal size, (96 DPI).

Send me the money to buy one and I'll give you a second opinion for free  ;D

I like my L170p IBM 17" ThinkVision I have on my Vista system

Don't adjust the Display properties away from Normal size as applications depend on this to display information in windows that are designed for this and will make the information truncated.

They are coming down in price all the time, so I would imagine in Canada and the USA they can be obtained even cheaper.

Mine cost £240.99 inclusive of tax and shipping, so I couldn't say no to a deal that good as I have been planning on replacing my monitor for some time, saving up my pocket money ;D
