Is avast compatible with other browsers?
« on: March 16, 2009, 03:23:13 PM »
Hello.

"Web Shield

The Web Shield acts as a transparent HTTP proxy and is compatible with all major web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, FireFox, Mozilla and Opera."

My question:

Is avast only scan IE,FF and Opera? i want to change my web browser to SRWare Iron browser(uses chrome code) any problem with avast?

I want to ask other browsers too. for example Safari 4 beta.

Best regards.

Yes. It scans the http traffic regardless of your browser (if it uses the default port 80 to communicate).
I use SRWare Iron too and WebShield is working.

I think that is just an example as it does support many others by default and there is a way to have other browsers use the web shield localhost proxy.

SWIron is still relatively new and isn't on the supported list so you have to make some adjustments to its settings or the avast4.ini for it to work. The same might be true of safari 4.

I think your links won't work for everyone ;)

Here's a topic about this - you can find the answer there...
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=42450.0

And here a small description:
- disable the self-defence of avast (via the settings)
- open the avast folders (for example: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA)
- open the file avast4.ini with the editor and add a line in the [WebScanner] section
- add the line: OptinProcess=iron.exe
(this line is for iron - for other browsers use the name of the browser file)
- save and close the avast4.ini
- start the self-defence of avast again (via the settings)
- restart the computer
- it should work now :)

The link and associated info will work just fine if going with manually setting the browser to use the web shield proxy. Which is why I suggest that option as there is no requirement to jump through the self-defence hoops and edit the avast4.ini which many might not be comfortable with..

Sorry, if i stated wrong...  :-\
I just wanted to say that the links themselfes probably couldn't work for everyone because they link to a restricted zone in the forum...which are not accessible for everyone... (you have to remember that you are a "VIP-forum-user" ;) )
