I think it's missing the @gmail after the user and the port number must be correctly set.

The problem was you were trying to configure the GMail account on Outlook Express to go to GMail via the avast Internet Mail provider.This must not be done - the avast Internet Mail provider cannot scan the secured connections that GMail requires you to use with their servers. Scott pointed you at the correct direct connections that are needed for GMail; you need to stick with those.
Could it be that you have missed the .com?It isn't shown in the error message--> pop.gmail.com
