rapidshare problem
« on: March 22, 2009, 07:52:50 AM »
I have a problem to download files from rapidshare since last week.

I dont have a premium account so i do it as a free member.

when i start to save the file into my PC the download speed slowly gets to 1kb or less than that and freezes there, the download doesnt cancel itself but i dont download anything and i dont know whats happening.

Can anyone help or have any idea what can be the problem?

Sounds like the normal experience of free Rapidshare users. It makes free users wait for a time before the download will commence then it downloads very slowly and then stops ... waits a while and it downloads very slowly again .... then it stops .... you get the picture.

This has been the experience in Rapidshare for a long time ... it is also what they tell you very clearly up front ... you get a terribly slow experience unless you pay.  Simple answer to this one is (and it has nothing at all to do with avast) that Rapidshare is a really really bad choice unless you want to pay for its service.

The same can be said for:
easy-share.com
depositfiles.com
uploading.com
megaupload.com
and a host of other services in this category.
Since a lot of the files from these services contain an unwanted payload,
they are also good places to avoid.  :)

You could try 4shared.com - free file sharing and storage - http://www.4shared.com/

That too has a bit of a pregnant pause to start on free accounts, but I didn't see any changes in download speed/continuity, but on dial-up it would be hard to tell as everything is slow ;D

Yes, life in the slow lane isn't so bad, some days my connection speed absolutely blazes along at 52.0 Kbps. That's supposedly a smidgen over 6 KB per sec or a theoretical download of 160 seconds per MB downloaded. Theory doesn't work like that though, my usual is 200 seconds (3 1//3 minutes) per MB download ;D

That seems about normal for a 52K connection. That is what I have 99% of the time.

David,

I think you have hit on the one circumstance where your connection could look like new age broadband compared with free Rapidshare.

The malware comes with the file you download  not necessarily the service you're using.

You're fully right. I make a generalization.

It has nothing to do with loyalty, but distance from the telephone exchange.
