If you have not updated to SP3 that has been available for almost a year that has several Critical Security fixes then the system is probably infected with malware preventing avast! install.

Download Malwarebytes MBAM:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If you can not get to the site then the system is definitely infected and you will have to download on a no-infected system then use the special removal instructions:

Downloaded and scanned with MBAM. Except one all others detected were website trackers etc. The different one is an exe (trojan) which remains despite deletion with MBAM and manual deletion. It is in temporary internet files.
Downloaded and installed SP3 but the problem persists. The Windows error message is:
"BCCode : 10000050 BCP1 : FFFFFFF0 BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 80526431
BCP4 : 00000000     OSVer : 5_1_2600     SP : 3_0     Product : 256_1" and the tech details are as shown in attached file.

Run the free Memtest86 for a while:

Have you checked the system for overheating?
Have you cleaned out the dust bunnies over the CPU cooling fins lately?
