Apple Software Update
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:53:09 PM »
Dear Forum,

As you can probably tell I am doing a clean out of unwanted programs :-)

The entry 'Apple Software Update' appears is this related to Quicktime Player?

I am running Window$ XP SP3 and as far as I am aware the only Apple product I have installed is Quicktime Player.

If I remove 'Apple Software Update' will this adversely affect Quicktime Player or my computer?

Thanks again so much for the help!

Yes, I've noticed  ;D.

Well, "Apple software update" updates quicktime, iTunes, and all other apple software.  I don't like it on my computer, but it's sort of a personal preference.  You can update your programs manually, or you can have Apple software update check for updates on it's own.

Thanks Schythe!

So assuming I am happy to update Quicktime manually, would you recommend its removal?

Edit: I decided to uninstall it and got the following message :O

'There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor'.

Suggestions and advice would be most appreciated!! :-)

Thanks!

heck yeah.  I wouldn't have that thing running every time my computer starts, it's got plenty of other more important things to do!

Yuck, it sounds like you're having major Windows installer issues.

I'd re-register your windows installer files, but I can't remember how to do that off of the top of my head, let me look around and get back to you on that.

Try this suggestion:

First, try the old faithful reboot; this error may be the result of an RPC
error. If a reboot does not clear the RPC error, you have bigger problems
than installing MSI packages!

Reregister the Windows Installer service by typing "msiexec /unregister" and
then "msiexec /regserver" at the command line.

If that doesn't work, take a look at this page, and follow the "Cleanup iTunes installer" Link

Thanks Scythe.

To be honest most of the programs I install and uninstall work smoothly.

It's only these few little twats which I can't remove :)

Thanks!

Woah! I think I fixed it!!

I clicked on change then 'repair'. It appeared to reinstall itself.

Then I clicked on change and 'remove' and it is now GONE!!! :-)

Thanks Scythe for your support and I hope this helps others with this problem!!

Sure, no problem.

As to my thinking that you had major windows installer issues, it was because of the HP software and TWEAKUI that wouldn't uninstall for you in your earlier post.

If other things are being removed properly, then you're right, it's probably ok.

Try this:

Start menu - settings - control panel - add or remove programs

Click on Apple Software Update and then on change

When the box appears click 'repair'.

Wait until it finishes repairing and reinstalling itself.

Now click again on Apple Software Update BUT this time on uninstall.

Worked for me!!

Good luck!

Dear Chronoboi001,

I'm sorry that solution didn't work. Tech has recommended the programme 'RevoUninstaller' for removing items whose installation is defective.

You can read his response here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=43644.msg365811#msg365811

Hope that helps. Should I hear any further solutions I shall post back here.

Best of luck,
