Can't send or receive Email after installing AVAST
« on: April 04, 2009, 05:07:50 AM »
Hi,

I have an ADSL broadband connection to the internet and previously had Norton AntiVirus installed, then AVG, then Bigpond Security (An Australian company software).  After having problems with all of these I tried uninstalling everything and using AVAST.  At first I couldn't use my browser or email.  Then I changed the HTTP redirect port in the webshield to 3128 and it worked.  Now I can't use email.  If I stop the Internet Mail provider then my email works fine but when I start it again I get the following error message.

The server responded with an error. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 61.9.168.249 (61.9.168.249:110), connect error 10061', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

I have read the knowledge base and checked through the forums and still can't find a solution to my problem.  I would really appreciate some help with this.

Other details: Operating System is Windows XP
Avast Version is 4.8
Email Client Outlook Express

Thanks
Judy

You probably have left over parts of your previous A/V programs.

My suggestion would be to use the removal tool for Norton and AVG.

Well, maybe you could download hijackthis, and post a log for us to look at.  Then, we'll be able to see what antivirus is still on your computer, then we can suggest a removal tool for you to make sure that the entire program has been correctly removed.

If you need help on following those directions, let us know and we'll try to provide links and instructions on how to do so.
For generic computer (not avast) problems, you can also visit my forum for help: http://www.jacobytech.net/forum

Welcome to the forums, 2J.   :)

Please download HijackThis from the link below. Do not download HJT to the desktop but instead download it into it's own folder on the hard drive.

Run the program but do not make any fixes and then post the log results using the "copy & paste" method. It will probably take more than one post to be able to get the complete log posted.

OR, you can post it as an attachment to your post by clicking on "Additional Options..." below left of the posting box.  Someone will review your log and then offer help.

First:
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

If after having done this it still doesn't work:
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and check for email, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Note: changing the browser redirect is effectively disabling the web shield, so there is a possibility that the firewall could also be blocking ashWebSv.exe, so check that out again after resetting the redirect to 80.

Apologies if this post is not in the correct category but I have installed BullGuard anti-spam filter and have found that Avast stops any incoming mail. I am using Outlook and Avast 4.8 and Sunbelt Personal Firewall. I have contacted BullGuard and they advised that I contact Avast regarding my settings, so any help would be much appreciated. The message I get from Outlook is as follows:

The server responded with an error. Account: 'diesel nut', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded(pass:20, processes:svchost.exe[20]), there is a collision with another program', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

Please start a New Topic of your own as this seems unrelated to the original subject and will just confuse the topic and we will try to help.
- Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the avast 4.x Home/Pro forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.
