VRDB - where is it (newbie)
« on: April 09, 2009, 05:44:14 PM »
Hi,
Just wondered where the VRDB database that avast 4.8 creates is located?

Is it possible to store large avast files, like VRDB, in a user defined location. I ask as I don't really like storing databases on the system partition (which is where I guess it will be).
thanks.

Well to answer your question, I don't know.

But here are two points.

1. The database is most likely small as it only backs up key (emphasis on this word) files. So not worth that much trouble.

2. The upcoming version of avast (5.0) will no longer provide the VRDB. This version will be out soon in 3 to 4 months roughly. So unless your Operating system is not able to handle this new version then you shouldn't worry about it
Computer Systems:

Intel Pentium 4 641 / 2GB RAM / Vista Home Basic SP2 / avast! 5.0 Home / SAS Free / MBAM Free / Windows Defender / Windows Firewall / Spyware Blaster/ Secunia PSI / Firefox 3.6 / Opera 10.5

Core2Duo T8300 / 4GB RAM / Vista Home Premium SP2 (32 bit version) / Same Software.

This is where it is stored, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\integ\avast.int it will always be in that structure. There is nothing to stop you installing avast on a different partition or hard disk (must be internal).

As has been said there will be no VRDB come avast 5.0.

Are you sure that VRDB is going to be dropped in version 5?

I thought that would not have been decided yet?  ???

Hmh... I started to wonder if I was spreading false rumors and I knew I had seen it somewhere. So I did a search of the forums and found from where I had this notion of VRDB.

...Now come version 5 there won't be any VRDB ...

Thank you for reconfirming David. ;D

As far I know this was posted by Vlk, saying that they already don't know but probably it would be dropped down.

Since that link is in a closed forum, it won't be available to the OP, but Confused Computer User would be able to see it.

3. VRDB? Won't it be left behind?
Most probably removed.

Nope. I didn't see anything expect for what I have in quotes above.

Thank you tech for bringing in another point of view. But this leaves the issue open.

Can a member of the Avast team confirm or infirm if the VRDB will NOT be included in the future build of Avast?

As has been said its usefulness is now very limited from when it was first introduced as malware has moved forward. It is this reduced value that would drive the issue if it should continue.

Wandering slightly off-topic, but triggered by the above comment ... is there any indication yet of what the sys requirements for 5.0 will be like?

I don't believe there has, but with win2k, XP or higher if you can run 4.8 I believe you will be able to run avast 5.

Not Windows 9x / Me compatible.
Probably will require a little bit more free RAM to run (due to virus database increase).
