 ??? on quick mode my avast came back at end of scan saying " unable to scan archives password protected " ? can anyone help me on this ....what does it mean lol.....john

I think this is on wrong area, but i believe it generally means that the file being scanned has it's contents protected.
For instance a .zip or .rar file that needs a password entered to see the files inside.
If you are not using BART, they can also be files that are being used by windows and are in protected mode and can not be scanned.
A boot time scan is a good idea if you are concerned about these.

If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct.

Well, as the message says - you configured the scanner to scan the content of archive files, and the archive being currently checked is password-protected. So, the content of this one cannot be scanned (the password would be needed for the unpacking).
Generally, it's not a problem you should worry about.
