configure Avast to boot run on every reboot
« on: April 17, 2009, 12:10:29 AM »
I m trying to configure my Avast to autorun during every boot, is this possible with Avast Home with out clicking the schedule boot run every time? I'm thinking it might be possible to do it via services in XP but Im unsure of what the parameters should be.
Thanks

Well, why would you do that? It will take a lot of time unnecessarily... The on-access (resident) protection is enough. Boot time scanning is for infections and emergencies.

Anyway you could run:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:"*" /archives

Hi Bruised Ghost, and welcome.
Do you really want a boot scan at every startup (which could take an hour or more) or are you actually asking something else?

Avast, when installed, will auto-start with Windows, and be protecting the pc from the get-go.
Usually no need to run a boot scan unless tricky malware has been found, or is suspected.

Have you told him how long it will take (you would obviously have to run one to confirm the times) and the fact that avast would be running on boot to scan files that are loaded.

-= But I guess, quick scan everyday rather than a boot scan wont hurt.. Leave the boot/thorough scan for every next month or week..

If it is your employer requiring this, I guess that maybe it's your employers' computer, and he should be using Avast pro, not home.
If it is your own computer, and not used in employment, I'd tell him nicely to go jump. Or to pay you for the time the computer takes every startup to complete a (frankly unnecessary) boot scan.

If you are sure you want to do it, you can automatically schedule a boot-time scan by creating a new registry value, in the key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

Create a new alphanumeric value with:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:"*" /archives

After that, a new boot-time scan will be scheduled each time you start the system.

I told him that a boot run was pointless and would take to much time, network resources, and would be costly for those reasons and that a quick scan was more than ample and the asshole fired me.

Claiming "you put this virus on my network"

to which I responded, "no... I just started here (1 week ago) and noticed that the virus definitions were over a year out of date, when I ran auto update I was able to detect several viruses (including a worm) and I have since removed them, it is what you paid me to do as a network admin."

To which he responded "NO WE HAVE AVG, AVG ALWAYS WORKS, WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD AVG."

I then said, "Yes you did have avg but the virus definitions were incredibly out of date offering you almost no protection, you old network or sys admin never configured AVG properly this is not my fault."

he then said, "AVG has always worked, we are fine this is your fault."

keep in mind this is coming from a guy who didn't know what a .XLS file was.

Well, at least IT isn't hurting as bad as the rest of the economy.

wow... you serious?

I doubt you'd want to work for someone like that anyway though.  Hope you find something quick, I haven't seen many I.T. Jobs around that don't require Masters degrees, 25 years experience, etc.
