As far as I'm aware there is still a free version, but the MBAM site doesn't make a big deal about it as rightly they are trying to sell the paid version to support their research and development.

s you say the free to try may well just become the free version after the trial period, which I can find nothing about the duration, but if you did have to pay it is a one off payment rather than an annual license (at least it is so far).

MBAM Free does not expire but updates have to be done manually and the scans have to be done manually but doing this once per day is fine unless you suspect something has invaded your system and Quick scan is very effective as it finds 99.9% of known new malware infections.

MBAM is a good addition to any anti virus but it is not a substitute for it.

There is a 64bit version in beta test right now and should be released shortly through normal update delivery.

Since the resident protection isn't in the free version, I see no need to update it daily, I download updates once a week, just before I do my weekly scan.
