Unknown Error
« on: June 06, 2003, 02:51:58 PM »
I get an unknown error on a win2kpro station.

Application cannot load help file:
c:\......\help\checklistsimple.chm

No .chm file wants to load.

I have no problem on an other win2kpro station. Already tried reinstalling avast! 4... No go...

Thanks,
Vinzz

Vinz,

The first thing we need to do is make sure that you DO have a help file.  Follow the data path in the error message and see if you have the file
Reinstalling would not fix the problem if the file was destroyed or corrupted.  Compare the file size in the troubled unit with the one that is working.  I don't remember what the file size is at the moment.

Did Avast ever work on this particular station?

Another suggestion may be to copy the file from the other W2x computer to the one with the problem to see if it is a fix.

If not, you  may need to download a fresh copy of Avast and try a new reinstall.  A recommendation here is to obtain a copy of AVCLEAR from Alwil.  It is a small program to remove all remnants of Avast before a new install.  It was designed for Avast32, but works equally well on Avast 4.  I have found that this program does help in giving you a good reinstall.
One of the more common mistakes users make when doing an installation on any program is to leave other programs running in the background.  Make sure you shut down all other non-essential operating system programs before starting the install so that the new program can go in "clean" without conflicts.

Good luck,
Let me (rather all of us) know how things go. ;)

Another thing to try might be updating your HTML Help libraries... check Microsoft HTML Help.

Also, it may be some problem in the Script Blocker. Are you using avast! 4 Home or Professional?

Hello,

Reinstall does not work, neither that update mentioned above.
Using Home edition.

Thanks,
Vincent

Do other Java- and VB- scripts work?
(In other words, do pages like www.cnn.com or www.microsoft.com work correctly?)
