News videos on CNN
« on: April 28, 2009, 10:07:51 PM »
:(  Ever since I installed avast!, news videos from CNN.com won't load.  I have no tv reception where I live, so CNN is it for me.  Does anyone know what settings on avast! I should alter to be able to see CNN news videos again?  Please explain clearly as I am not a computer brain.  Other than this, I am happy with avast!  Thanks to anyone who can help.

Well avast doesn't block, it isn't a firewall, but scans and alerts to infection.

So my only assumption is that these news videos are streamed on port 80 the http port and this would be scanned by the web shield. If that stream didn't strictly conform to HTTP protocols then it could cause a problem in the web shield. This is speculation on my part, but if you have a specific URL them we can try and test it (e.g. someone with broadband as me on dial-up probably wouldn't get too far).

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Well, if the OP doesn't have good TV reception where they live, I doubt that they are on broadband, but that's just a guess.

As DavidR suggests, please post a sample link to something that does not work anymore after installing avast, and we'll check it out (I have comcast now, but I have FIOS being installed on friday, finally!)

It's a good chance that a previously installed A/V program is causing the problem as well.  Please let us know, and we'll go from there.

I don't know about that assumption, as for me it is impossible to watch something like streaming video on dial-up. So I would assume that CNN news Videos would be the same.

Well, I guess it depends on the bit rate of the video too, but you're right, any streaming video is painful or unwatchable on dial-up access.  I can't even remember being on dial up, so I couldn't say.

Guess we'll wait and see what he says.
