I ran a scan last night, and several "suspicious" files were found. They were listed as rootkit types.

They all were variations of:

C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB956390-IE7\SP2QFE\?

I had 2 options, delete or ignore. I tried to delete, but got the warning not to do it if I was unsure if they were viruses. So I clicked "ignore", and sent a report to Avast.

I got the warning to schedule a boot time scan, which I did. Nothing else came up.

Now I'm worried I have a virus running on my computer and don't know what to do. I'm tempted to run another scan and delete those files, but I don't want to erase something important!

HELP!

Welcome to the forums, S-100.   :)

Let us see if anything shows up in the registry.

Please download HijackThis from the link below. Do not download HJT to the desktop but instead download it into it's own folder on the hard drive.

Run the program but do not make any fixes and then post the log results using the "copy & paste" method. It will probably take more than one post to be able to get the complete log posted.

OR, you can post it as an attachment to your post by clicking on "Additional Options..." below left of the posting box.  Someone will review your log and then offer help.

No.

I need to know if I can delete those suspicious files if they show up on a later scan.

 :) Hi :

Those "redirect(s)" in your HijackThis log indicate a possible problem, best
resolved by an experienced, certified, Volunteer "Malware Removal Specialist"
that can be found on advanced malware removal forums, such as "Spyware
 Beware", http://aumha.net, etc .

For a 2nd Opinion on possible rootkits, I recommend using the FREE
 RootkitRevealer, available at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897445.aspx .

Your HijackThis log shows an extremely outdated Java program from Sun,
an extreme security risk . Not knowing HOW many "Versions/Updates" you
may have of this program, I recommend you use the FREE "JavaRa",
 available from http://raproducts.org .

NOTE : Should NOT "Upgrade" an Operating System unless One is malware-free .
