Why would you disable it?
You can, but why do you want to do so?

Yes, Windows XP is on SP3.
You can configure the time you want to do this check and if you want it just to check and warn or download and install...

You can also do what I do, simply disable auto-updates and check the MS Update page.  That still works fine even with auto-updates turned off.

I agree, on my system too the check for updates slows things down considerably.  But what the heck, I know when Patch Tuesday is.  And if anything's critical enough that MS releases it off-schedule, you'll certainly hear about that here and many other places.

Mike, a Celeron 2.2ghz with only 256 meg RAM running XP-Home SP3 is bound to be slow.

You should get at least another 256MB RAM or preferably 512MB RAM.

Check out crucial.com for RAM memory needs:

My old 2.4GHZ P4 only has 512MB RAM and it is about 1/2 as fast as my 2.8GHZ P4 system.
