Rpc Error
« on: May 13, 2004, 06:18:26 PM »
Hi, saw a simular problem below but fellow has quit responding before you could get his issue resolved.

I stopped Avast thru task manager and restarted it... and get the following message:

Quote
Program cannot use Chest client: (null)
--->Description: Virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed.

I am sure this has something to do with my installation, but am hoping its not too serious.

FyI am running Win2000 Server Os... but its operating as little more than a Desktop computer. Not quite sure why they didn't just install xp and enable file sharing... but this was the only version of Avast I could get to operate on this computer. Just a small fileshare network...  :)

And I am not a Llama... not sure why this post insists I am :D

Hi, is the avast antivirus service running?
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.

If not, can you start it? If not, what error message do you get?

Also, is there anything useful in the Windows Event Log, Antivirus category?

thanks
Vlk

I was able to find it in the Services directory, but I am not getting the "blue ball" in the system tray.

The only error message I get is that I posted before... started with errors. Virus chest not found.

ok found this in the event Log

Quote
Event Type:   Error
Event Source:   avast!
Event Category:   (8)
Event ID:   90
Date:      5/13/2004
Time:      10:48:36 AM
User:      HARPER\administrator
Computer:   SERVER
Description:
Error in aswChestC: chestOpenList Error 1753.

Does that help?

So what's its status? Did you try to start it?

Since it said "automatic" I assumed it started or tried starting itself.

I just tried starting and get the following error message:

Quote
Error 1069: The service did not start due to a logon failure.

Am I to add a password in here somewhere?

I would like to add... as soon as I can I am trashing this 2000 server crap of an Os and going back to 98Se soon.

Ok Next month... and I am not a Llama!! :D

The account is in the service's properties. Make sure to set the password correctly.

When entering the password and applying it seems to accept it. Then on restart it gives the same error, and looking back to the password it has reverted to the old(? never entered a password) password.
It looks like this

User: Admin
password:************
confirm :    ************

I do not have that many characters in my password, only 9 characters... yet is keeps showing 12 or more asterisks.

So, several times I have re-entered the password, same as the network logon password... and each time it reverts to something else and gives the same error. Will not start up.

Perhaps reinstalling it will help?

The 12 asterisk thing is normal. Windows doesn't want you (or anyone else) to see the length of password (because that would ease the brute-force attacks considerably).

Reinstallation wouldn't help either -- you need to have this working from the services applet. Try choosing a different account (is this a local or domain account? does it have local admin rights?)

Well doggie doo then... I uninstalled yesterday, and waited to reboot and reinstall until today to avoid interrupting the other computers. Now I double click the install... I get the folder and progression indicator... all the way to 100%. Then... nothing.

No blue ball, no message to agree or disagree with. Checked the services and task manager... no avast running.

Care to ride over and slap me around a bit? I'm not that busy... and feeling kinda like I was impatient.  ::)

Hi all, just to echo Dewbacca's problem with the "chest server" thing. Same with Dewbacaa, I'm not having a blue ball but the blue ball with a red stop sign. Same "chest server" error message...  8)
