trying to install avast

will not install, tried for two hours. i dont know much about this stuff. was told i would like this better than avg. any help.  windows xp

Did you uninstall AVG?  Try using their removal tool first, then try to install avast.  http://www.avg.com/download-tools

help us to help you, as there is no information to work with.

Why wouldn't it install, e.g. what errors ?

As scythe944 mentions not having uninstalled your previous AV is a normal culprit and we are seeing more remnants left behind with AVG8 even after uninstall, than with previous versions of it.
