I suggest looking into this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [Mpk.exe] E:\Program Files\KGB\Mpk.exe

It seems that the name of this program is the same as the name of the file. In the most cases this is the result of trojans. To be sure, you should check this file.

As for your sound, is all audio not working, or just Avast sounds?

Disregard that entry.. it's supposed to be there. :p

Yeah, the computer has no sound at all, not just avast. When I downloaded the file avast went off and I deleted it, but since then no sound at all.

Found a dropper in an incomplete file, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. :p

What does your device manager say for your sound card?  Are there drivers installed for it?  I'm thinking that avast may have thought one of your sound card drivers was a virus (accidentally) and may have quarantined it.

Have you checked the avast virus chest to see if there is anything in it?

The drivers seem to be there. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall them anyways. It's obviously a software problem because the speakers work. It could be that avast did something of the sort.. I just find it odd that it happened right when I downloaded a file which happened to be flagged by avast as a virus. :p

Yeah, that is weird.   Again though, any information as to what avast did or did not remove or put into the quarantine might help find the culprit.

Also, how do you know that the speakers work? Have you tried them on a different computer or other source?  They're plugged in all the way?

Have you done a reboot?

 Try this:

Right click avast system tray icon > Program Settings > Troubleshooting > Check "Load avast services after loading other system services" > OK

For at least, I suffered same thing as he does and it was really avast's fault [in my case]. No wonder that when I uninstalled avast, sounds were back.

It happened on my old Windows 2000 machine.

Yes, at first, I do not actually believe it but it did. It was situated by the time I posted about the system freeze ups when avast is installed and even repair function wont work even after reinstallation [incl. removal tool of avast] keeps the problem persisting.

I did not find any particular solution to it since I switched to avira for a month, got fed up, and reformat. But as of now, I do not suffer it anymore.
