Can't install Avast 4.8 Home
« on: May 11, 2009, 11:44:50 PM »
I was using AVG 7.5 and as of a few weeks ago it no longer supports Windows 98, so there are no further updates. I can't go to a later version of AVG, because they too do not support Windows 98.

I am trying to install Avast 4.8 Home, which I understand supports Windows 98 and I am having problems. I will be purchasing a new computer at the end of the year, but figure if I don't have up to date virus protection, I could have a problem from now until then. I use Spybot Search & Destroy and ZoneAlarm. At the current time I have dial-up.

I went to cnet to download Avast Home Edition 4.8.1335.90414.

http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

Everything seems to start out fine and I see "Downloading File: Setupeng.exe" After some percentage of downloading it stop and I see "There was an error while completing the setup process" and "View setup log"

Here is the setup log:

At first I thought because it takes some time to download with dial-up that I was loosing the dial-up connection during the process. So I asked a friend to burn it to a disc. No difference.

I am now thinking that the site may be the problem, because no where did it require me to register. I see on the Avast site it says:

"Free registration

avast! antivirus Home Edition is FREE to use but it is necessary to register before the end of the initial 60 day trial period. Following the registration you will receive by e-mail a license key valid for a period of 1 year. After you have downloaded and installed the program, the license key must be inserted into it within 60 days. The registration process is very easy, and it will take you only a couple of minutes".

Your assistance would greatly be appreciated in getting this problem resolved so I may download Avast and have an up to date antivirus program on my OLD computer for the remainder of 2009.

Download it from avast site and not from CNET.
Also, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Same thing, albeit the setup log appears to be shorter :-(

I followed all instructions, but would like to mention that that I went to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs and Avast was not there. I just looked again after trying to install from the avast site and again it is not there. So I now assume there is nothing to uninstall as it does not appear that it is installing in the first place.

I have the avast_home_setup icon on my desktop, but the same thing happens. I open it...click next "Downloading Packages" "Downloading file: setupeng.exe"...starts downloading and about 35% through, I get the message "There was an error while completing the setup process" "View setup log".

I wonder if I should go back and burn a disc using the avast site.

On the first page of setup wizard, press "Proxy settings" button and select No proxy (direct connection).
Then press Next to continue.

I tried by selecting No proxy (direct connection) and that too did not work. Here is the log:

Can you send me log from hijackthis?
Download the program here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
Then run it and press button "Do a system scan and save a logfile", then send the generated hijackthis.log (you can send it just to my email).

It might be caused by incorrect uninstall of previous security software, or even possibly by some malware.

Alternatively you can download full setup on our website, just press download next to your desired language version:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

On the first page of setup wizard, press "Proxy settings" button and select No proxy (direct connection).

Why does the auto-detection fail is some scenarios?

Setup uses 2 different download engines - wininet.dll (used by IE, it's the auto-detect setting) or winsock (direct connection).
Usually direct connection (winsock) helps for users with ADSL connection where the wininet engine fails (we don't know why  :-[)
Also, some malware can install as wininet proxy and when it detects connection to our servers, the downloaded stream returns just a file filled with zeros instead of real data. Setting direct connection bypasses this too.

Have you tried using the AVG removal tool?
As Forejt mentions above, could be related...

Scott,

I am scared to death to uninstall AVG at this time. While as of a few weeks ago it is no longer being supported (no more updates), at least I have the antivirus protection without the updates. And, as mentioned, I am just trying to get through 2009. If I uninstall AVG now and continue not to be able to download avast, then I am completely vulnerable.

Next I will try as Foreijt suggests (even though I think I already tried that), downloading full set up at:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

By the way, I use Internet Explorer, but mostly an old version of Mozilla. Could the problem be with that?

I will be back :(

Are you saying that you are trying to install Avast! with AVG already installed ???
This very likely conflict could well be the source of your problems.

Also make sure you follow the other part of his advice(this could well be very advantageous):

Also, I don't think that IE or FF could be the problem

Hope this helps,

An antivirus without updates is more or less useless... it will just take space, use resources, but won't protect...
