Hello, I'm using Avast! Home Edition with free license.

Is there any way to completely disable two services (ashServ and aswUpdSv) and one HKLM startup item (ashDisp) to which it holds on?
I want to update, manage infected files and run scanner manually, so I just don't need these extra features.

ashDisp.exe can be removed in safe-mode, but it just keeps turning these services on next time I start the scanner ...

Thanks in advance.

-= Maybe this could slightly terminate it.. Right click avast tray icon --> Program Settings --> Troubleshooting --> Disable self defense module..

As far as I'm aware,

AshServ.exe is the actual antivirus program itself.
AswUpdSv.exe is the updating service.
AshDisp.exe is the interface that provides you with access to the scanner GUI and the taskbar icon.

I believe these are necessary for Avast to run.

As you can see, these are the features that you are asking for, you have stopped the other resident protection providers.

Please correct me if I'm wrong,

Hope this helps,

  • If at first you don’t succeed; call it version 1.0

There might be a way to do it, but Avast is not intended to be used as a demand scanner.
Alternatives are Clam, or DrWebs' Cureit.
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

-= Same thing for Avira.. Not totally on-demand but acts like it since it has a read/write scanner.. But, you'll be getting more unprotected in that way due to increased web threats like iFrames infections & redirectors..

Good advice, thanks! So far services stay the way I set them.

I believe these are necessary for Avast to run.

No, they are not. It runs perfectly fine without them.
They are for resident protection and auto-updates mainly.

There might be a way to do it, but Avast is not intended to be used as a demand scanner.
Alternatives are Clam, or DrWebs' Cureit.

Clam has a miserable detection rate. CureIt is a good one, I use it too, but detection rate is average (FP is also low I believe, which is great).

Well, without ashServ service, you won't be able to move infected files to Chest, for example (or manipulate with the Chest in any other way).

avast is not intended to run as non-resident.

Why do you need that? Which is your other (real) antivirus?
