ashWebSrv.exe in Windows Task Manager so high sometimes?
« on: May 23, 2009, 06:47:36 PM »
All I have open is IE and Outlook Express. I usually pause and then continue Web Shield and that brings it down.

Thank you in advance for any assistance given.

Strange... What does WebShield interfere with mail processing?
Which was your old antivirus (before avast)?

I don't believe WebShield is interfering with mail processing. I guess my point was I had running at the time.
Originaly I had McAfee, then AVG Free 7.5 and finally for about little over 2 years Avast!

Can you activate logging in WebShield?
0. (Disable avast self-defense module: Program settings > Troubleshooting tab of settings.)
1. Edit <avast>\data\avast4.ini file with Notepad (or use step 0 with other text editors).
2. Find the section [WebScanner]
3. Add the line:
    EnableLogging=1
4. Restart Web Shield in XP\Vista (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
5. Browse (trying to access some webpages)

The log file are <avast>\data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.

Oh, enable the self-defense module again after that if you have to follow step 0.

The log file are <avast>\data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.

No ashwebv.log found in that location and ashwebsv.ws is blank ( which I opened with notepad and by mistake set it openwith notepad permantely. What should I do next?

The web shield log file would only be present as Tech said if you first enable web shield logging, items 0 - 5 of his instruction. Did you first enable logging in the avast4.ini ?

Which is your operational system?
You'll need to restore back this file association...

OK you would probably need to reboot before the changes ini file took effect, then as you browse the log should start to get populated, then hopefuly it may show what activity may be causing this.

If you have rebooted and it doesn't get generated I don't know what to suggest.

OK I did a little test I added the EnableLogging=1 to my avast4.ini but I didn't want to reboot, so I tried Terminating the Web Shield and then starting it and low and behold the AshWebSv.log file was created.

See image1, whilst it is currently 0KB I have to start browsing and see if it gets populated. After just opening a few pages it gets populated very quickly, see image2. So I don't understang what is wrong with yours.

Could it be that mine is named AshWebSv, not AshWebSv.log?
