I am using Vista on my Dell laptop and have no complaints. I did notice some suggesting to change to Windows 7.  Is that a feasable thing to do. Is updating Vista on my Dell machine with Vista installed originally a good idea?  I don't mind paying the fee when Windows 7 is released.
I will keep my XP machines where they are as they are working with just a few seldom crashes which I can recover from easily.

Hey roro, I can't suggest upgrading Vista to Win7 as several friends of mine had problems after the upgrade. I've found that doing a fresh install of a new OS is almost always better.

But, if you do want to upgrade,  Paul Thurrott has a good article about it:

Why not upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 and take advantage of all the fixes that have been instituted?
The RC release is very stable, much faster than Vista. You also get to use it for almost a year before you
need to purchase the final version.  :)

There you go again making me jealous.

No matter where I try to download to it says I don't have enough authority and I am the only user and I I am logged on as Administrator.

I don't have problems downloading from anywhere else.

Maybe its just my unfamiliarity with Vista.

From the Microsoft site.
From here ?:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
That's the site.

Now it just sits there with this displayed

Please wait while the Download Manager begins your download.

If you have not already installed ActiveX control or the JavaTM applet, an information box will appear in your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser prompting you to install "ActiveX control:...".
If the Download Manager can not install the ActiveX control or the JavaTM applet in your browser, you may have system restrictions.

If you have system restrictions, please:

* Download products using the Web Browser method
* Contact your organization’s Administrator to download products using the Download Manager method

I have disabled Vista Firewall Control, made sure all IE extensions are enabled and disabled the HOSTS file.

Maybe Vista knows something I don't and does not want me to have Windows 7 ;D

By the way, what is a good Free backup application?

There is an alternative which you'll find at:
http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/Windows7Beta/
It may take you a little longer to complete the download however.  :)
My server isn't as fast as M$.  ;D

I'm trying Vista SP2.

I wish I could sell this old XP Home system then maybe I could afford a second Vista system to do Windows 7 testing.

I have Vista Firewall Control Plus and it is quite comprehensive but it does not support my DSL modem so I am disapointed.

I still believe that a well protected system does not need a software firewall:
http://www.besttechie.net/2008/08/20/malwarebytes-developer-interview <== software firewall discussion starts about 8 minutes into the video.

Both videos are excellent.

Did you try the free offer from Online Armor listed in the update thread ?
I found it to be an excellent firewall and a free 1 year liscense isn't bad either.

YoKenny, what kind of backup application do you want to use?

Windows has the built-in "NTBackup", which is decent.

For windows Vista, it's still there, but there are a few drawbacks, such as not having the ability to backup .exe files without doing a full system backup.

There are online solutions as well, but they are limited in the "free" versions.  It's located in my signature, as well as Tech's (It's called Mozy).

Of course there are free disk imaging products as well, but that's for disk imaging, not file-level backups.  I guess you'll have to be more specific about what you want to do.  There aren't many free solutions to be had though, I'm afraid.
For generic computer (not avast) problems, you can also visit my forum for help: http://www.jacobytech.net/forum
