Siren with Alert
« on: May 30, 2009, 02:49:06 AM »
...
Almost had a heart attack when the siren went off a short time ago. Took me a few seconds to realize it wasn't a North Korean missile attack and the siren was not coming from outside.

So when did Avast start using this siren bit? I sure don't recall ever hearing it before. On the other hand, one unit doesn't have a sound card and the other unit may not have ever had a trojan alert before, so it might not be so new.

Still, it scared the heck out of me. Did some service in an environment many years ago where one quickly learns to pay attention to sirens. And a new siren that the brain can't comprehend right away tends to cause an adrenaline rush, and I don't need that anymore.

If preferred, you can disable it either through the Avast program settings, or via the "sounds" scheme you use.
Personally, I prefer to have it on, though the first time I heard it I freaked a bit. Mind you, it's nothing compared to Kasperskys' sound warning.
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

You may find the following a little more soothing:

Well, I appreciate the link for the Frank Sinatra tune. Well, I didn't check the link, but I assume it would be some Ol' Blue Eyes tune, right?

But I reckon I'll be okay with that in future. It's all in the prgramming. That first time I was a bit surprised. More than a bit, actually. Like I wrote, old training kicks in and adrenaline does its job.

In fact, I just went back to the chest and listened to it again and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I noticed one earlier virus a few months ago also must have triggered the siren, but I may have been away from the work station. This unit that it happened on has only had three such warnings, two today and one a few months ago, so didn't know it was a regular feature. The other unit doesn't talk much as I never gave it a voice box. Well, I mean a real voice box. It still mumbles occasionally and the case is open, so it makes plenty of other noises. I like being able to hear the hard drive. Kind of like listening to your engine -- can hear trouble a bit before it shuts down. Sometimes a long bit before. Can hear when it's time to change gears, too. It's an old one, like me.

Anyway, I'll leave it like it is. I'm actually wondering if I could record it and use it someplace. Like increase the volume by a factor of about 5 and add it to the car alarm.

-= It was surprising & catchy.. The first time I heard it, I had my headset while listening to my favorite band when suddenly the siren.. I panic.. then relax for a while.. and read what's in the dialog box: "There's no reason to panic".. :D

-= I hope avast 5 will have same feature to "sound" an alert when there is an error starting up avast or when on-access protection has been disabled due to my previous experience wherein I am not aware that avast is not actually running due to an RPC error so, 3 trojans made their way in my pc..
