The purpose of doing the manual update was to ensure that it isn't being blocked by the firewall, if it was then that would also be responsible for the auto update problem. This was also another reason for having you do a manual update to see if any error was reported.

You never said if there were any errors relating to the failure to auto update, this should happen if the update actually failed ?

The MBAM log has cleared what it found, plus avast scans see no other infected files, so I don't know what infection you are talking about ?
Did you also run SAS as previously suggested as you haven't posted that log ?

I ask question so I can get a better understanding of the problem, if you don't answer them I have no idea what to suggest.

You didn't answer these questions from my previous Reply #11:
- When you say avast is disabled what exactly do you mean by that ?
- What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

DavidR,

You seem to be confused as to what people are asking in this thread.  If you'll read a little closer, you'll see that EVERYONE has reported exactly the same issues.

1) Avast's Resident Scanner stays Disabled no matter how you set it
2) The Avast System Tray Icon does not show up no matter how you configure the appearance of the program
3) The Virus Chest will not open without errors (all detailed in previous posts)
4) All the previous problems persist regardless of uninstalling/reinstalling/firewalls, etc.

Is there anyone else out there who may have found a solution to this issue?  I have found the problem on a client's PC and I have not found anything anywhere on the web except for this thread which thus far, has gone nowhere.

Please help.

hi all, at this moment I'm scanning my pc with SUPERAntiSpyware and it's found 365 threats. So I'm getting there, but is there a specific source (ie website) that infects the pc?

I cannot remember visiting "malicious' site's. Furthermore, HOW did this virus infect my protected computer?

I mean, my other pc's are not infected (yet)...

If the threats are cookies, they don't present a threat. Don't worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though. - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie.

- Please start a New Topic of your own so it doesn't confuse the topic and we will try to help.
- Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the Viruses and Worms forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.

Here you can outline your problem and attach your SAS log file (Additional Options).

update:

it looked all ok, but yesterdaynight the shit hit the fan again.

It opens a fake System Security message advising me to download the latest version (not free btw).

I THINK NOT

A file called kglxcwjwaa.exe keeps on turning up in my Task Manager

the Avast systemtray icon still shows, but my pc is making it's own decisions atm

of course I pulled out my LAN-cable, was able to schedule a boot-scan which found several threats.

and now my pc hangs with several of those files mentioned in memory, even my mouse moves erraticaly

so HELP is much appreciated ;)

Do you think there might be some deep rooted virus that Avast might be missing as several users are reporting the same problem?  Have you done a Boot Time Scan with Avast with Archive Scanning checked?

What about an on-line scan with something like Trend Micro's HouseCall?

Any recommendations for techs if users were to post a HiJack This log in the Viruses and Worms forum?

@ DADEKEWL
Please do as suggested and start your own new topic and we can deal with your particular circumstances there.

@ Jack 1000
The problem is what is generating the messages isn't actually malicious/virus, it is the bait in the hope you will visit the site (possibly infecting your system) or fraudulent purchase of the suggest solution.

Whilst avast does detect these fake security alerts, there are so many variations on this theme it is very difficult to catch them all and that is why we suggest the specialist application/s.

No this isn't 'your' new topic but that of the original poster and when multiple people start posting their problems the topic becomes long and can be confusing and is considered hijacking the topic.

So we will see you in you own topic. If you are referring to this topic, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=47318.0, it seems to have been  resolved as your last reply two days ago seemed to indicate it was resolved after running MBAM. If that is not the case jump back into that topic or if different, create the new topic if it is unrelated.

I think I solved it, don't know how but it works for me now.

I was having the exact same problem (resident scanner would not enable no matter what), and got really sick of trying to find the answer. I then decided to just uninstall and find a new antivirus, I went into the Add/Remove programs list and clicked change/remove, it asked me to restart so I did. Then it just worked... I don't know how, but I do know it's suddenly working for me again. Give it a shot maybe it'll magically work for you too.
