How to remove infected Windows' s System files
« on: May 18, 2004, 04:18:04 PM »
Hi,

I have the Avast installed into my PC of Windows ME and the tool told me that my c:\windows\system32\kernel.dll is infected with the Redlof virus. Could anyone help to tell me how I can resolve the disaster please. I could not either repair or remove the virus from my file. Many thanks.

Imho there usually is no KERNEL.dll on WinXP, only a kernel32.dll

please state the full&exact name of the virus as avast tells it to you, see report

also look here:

The virus you are talking about was probably in use when you tried to remove it.  Try running the Avast Anti-virus console and right click it.  Select "Schedule boot time scan" and restart. Avast should run before allowing anything else to, thus making it possible to delete, or repair the infected file.

if this doesn't work download the virus removal tool from the avast mainpage and use it.

Hi JAM-C,

boot time is ok, but maybe he will still have to change some registry settings back..

But avast Cleaner imho won't clean REDLOF

you are right.  Boot time is simply a good place to start.

With WinMe be sure and have your "System Restore" feature disabled before removing the infection. Otherwise it might reappear all over again until you do this. :)
