Subscription Expired notice still comes up after subscription is renewed

Hi all,

This is my first post so I will try and include as much information as I can, but Im not totally familiar with this forums "norms" so sorry if im not describing things properly.

My problem is that I have entered a valid licence key into avast, and it DOES tell me it is automatically updating my virus database every time I turn on my computer, but it also tells me after a successful database update that my subscription has expired and that I must enter a new one. I have re-entered the key, but the situation remains the same. The part that has me really confused is that it appears to be keeping my AV database up to date, even though its also giving me the expired notification.

I didnt find anything on the forum about this. Is anybody familiar with this situation? Anyone know how to fix it?

Im running vista, and now that I think of it, this may have began when sp2 was installed a few days ago, but this may also be totally unrelated.

Hello and welcome Conn,

-Is your time and date accurate?

-If not perhaps you could restore to before SP2 and try again (maybe confirm this)

As you said, This could be caused by the installation of SP-2( I've seen this happen several times), Try what spg SCOTT suggests, but if that doesn't work , I would suggest that you uninstall Avast, reboot, Run the Avast uninstall utility, ( you can find it and the instructions for running it here)

Then reinstall Avast and see if that fixed the problem.

I think im going to try the reinstall of avast before i mess with vista sp2, just because it seems less risky.

However, I have been browsing the forum, and have found a few people who have had the same problem and reinstall didnt help. Also there were people saying they were having the same problem on xp.

One other thing I noticed is that the only avast process running right now in my task manager is ashDisp.exe  should there be more?
If I click on the avast icon in my system tray it seems to be scanning away happily so im a bit confused.

To be honest as long as its running, and protecting my computer, I dont mind clicking ex on the subscription expired notification when i turn on my computer for the moment. Right now my major concern is that I am actually protected.

Any thoughts on that?

Hi Conn!

Its normal that there is only ashDisp.exe running in the processes-section of the taskmanager... if you go to services you will find the other parts of avast! (antivirus, mail scanner, web scanner, aswUpdSv)

I think that you are fully protected, but to make sure you can try to download the EICAR Test-file...
You find it here. Avast should block the download.

That worked yes. For the moment I think I can get over the notification. My database is being updated, and I am protected. Think I will file it under the category "life is too short"!

I am just letting you know when I click on the word here in your post. avast said it found a virus. when you pulled up this addy did it not warn you about the virus www.eicar.org/download/eicar.com.

Its normal that there is only ashDisp.exe running in the processes-section of the taskmanager... if you go to services you will find the other parts of avast! (antivirus, mail scanner, web scanner, aswUpdSv)

I think that you are fully protected, but to make sure you can try to download the EICAR Test-file...
You find it here. Avast should block the download.

The Eicar test virus file is a file that AV companies and others can use to test the effectiiveness of the Antivirus, the detection that you mention is, effectively correct, however the file indicated for the download is harmless, it just serves to cause that alert.
Some people (me included) actually have this file on there computer, for the reasons described in the last part of the post by DavidR:

This is like I wanted it to be.
I directly linked to the Eicar-test-file and yes, I also get a warning message...
By the way this file is not dangerous and every antivirus finds it...
It is a simple string of numbers, letters and symbols...
