Exactly what stops running (avast has many shields) ?

What have you used for the 'several virus checks' ?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

That's me for the night 2:38am, hopefully someone else can pick up on this if you too aren't callink it a night.

i have a-squared installed too but i dont have it running, i have used avast to do the virus checks on my system, i got a-squered to compare results but not uninstalled it yet, i have had both on my system for a while but its only this past 2 weeks that avast will just stop running, ie, a no entry sign apears in the bottom of the avast system tray icon, if i try to manually shut it down it tells me that it cannot perform the operation. i will uninstall a-squared now and will post agian if the problem crops up again thanks

Whilst a-squared might have an impact, I doubt it in this case as it is an anti-spyware application unless it also has a resident anti-virus application, in which case it needs to be uninstalled.

Also a-squared isn't particularly good and I would suggest these anti-malware/spyware applications to compliment avast.

If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).

Don't worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though.

avast has a self-defence module that would prevent you from shutting it down, so a reboot may be the option to restart avast rather than try to shut it down.

ok i am currently running SAS again and it has found a trojan.DNSchanger-codec, i have been looking for ways to get rid of this threat but it seams that it will just re install itself on reboot according to most of the stuff i have read, is there any way to get rid perminantly? i am still in the middle of a SAS scan and it has only found this 1 threat so far, one post i read said that this type of hack is designed, amongst other things, to shut down the antivirus software, and not let you update, seams i have found the problem to my avast being switched off involunterily, any suggestions as to removing this threat perminantly?

Have you try running the scan and subsequent removal in safe mode ?

But what was the file name and location of the detection, that helps us find other possible information and tools.

What is your firewall ?
If it keeps coming back, there is likely to be an undetected or hidden element to the infection that restores or downloads the file again.
