I have just installed AVAST and I want to know do I need to have it start scanning when I switch on  my PC as it takes ages to scan and slows the start up so iI cannot get online for 10 mins or more.
Do I need to scan everything as it seems to slow down web access now or it crashes and stops access

Are you talking about the boot scan?If so,the answer is no,you don't have to do it every time you boot your pc...(hope this was all about ;D ).Once a month or two,is good enough.(or when you think you have a nastie in your pc as well) Or are you talking about the memory startup scan?If so,you can tick this options from Settings, general settings,DO NOT SCAN MEMORY ON STARTUP.

If you mean the scheduled boot-time scan, it's not necessary.

But I suspect that since you are delayed for a relatively short period of time,
you mean Avast regular scans when Windows starts, and then there are ways
to handle this in the 'trobleshooting' part of Avast settings.

Then a forum search will give you many hits.  :)

I suppose you are sure thar Avast is the culprit.

And welcome to Avast forums.

If it is the boot time scanning I'm surprised that it takes only 10 minutes...

How to disable scan at boot?
If you press F8 when starting Windows and select 'Last known good configuration' from the boot menu, the boot scan should not be started.
Or just run: C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /D
