Avast stops me logging into my router - confirmed! Any ideas
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:47:38 PM »
I can get to my Status page of my router but once I try to login, not only that I cant, but I must reset the router because all Internet activity is lost! Stopping all services to try and black box the problem doesn't work as I can only get into the router if I totally shut Avast down using Stop On Access Protection!

This is the current 4.8 with current definitions! One last IMPORTANT thing! This happens with THREE routers.. so clearly it is Avast vs router with perfectly good routers.  It is a Gnet router.. basically a DLINK by any other name as it is exactly the same unit as one of their older models!

Any ideas out there as to what may be causing this. This makes no sense to me or others that I have discussed it with.

Thank you for any help or light you may be able to shed on this problem.

OS is XP  ..... Only using Windows Firewall as the NAT router does a good job!   This has never happened with any other virus program and I have used Mcafee and Symantec over the years!

This is only since I installed Avast and as mentioned.. I can get into it if I briefly STOP all avast protection.. make my changes then get out.. and start avast again! Avast is somehow stopping me from accessing the router....  but not any one module can be isolated as all were turned off to try and test which one might be troublesome...

It did not matter... the only way to get in is STOP Avast.  When it takes it down.. it takes down the router as no other computer on my home network can get out either. Please dont forget.. not one router.. THREE of them! So fair to say I dont have a broken router.

Thank you! What module of avast could be doing that and why?

Before you ask... It does this with Windows Firewall turned off as well!

Did you remove (uninstall) them using the specialized uninstall tools of them?

With such bad attitude, you don't will get much help...

Be nice in here, and members of the forum will try to help you!

How did you remove Mcafee and Symantec? With specialized uninstall tools as Tech asked, or just from the control panel? Even if you have a clean system, "leftovers" from Symantec can make a computer act weird, so, a specialized uninstall tool is often needed, at least for Symantec products.

No, I have a clue, I've posted about my clue: remains of old antivirus installation.
You haven't say you've started this installation from the scratch.
avast is not a firewall, so, shouldn't block anything to connect.

Same problem here NETGEAR WNR 834 m
"CLEAN" XP PRO install
ALL UPDATES
Avast all updated too.
so no remnants of old antivirus etc etc etc.
sent tickets for "false positive" ..... NO response.
so here we are see if users can fix what avast dont seem to want to ?
It lets me onto the main page of the router but if I try to get to any pages concerned with security AVAST then locks me out with JAVA warnings and wont let me dismiss to be able to continue (should be an option if source is trusted !!!!)
My grid consists of 1 x WHS box, 1  xXP home, 3 x XP PRO, 1 x XP media center, apart from one machine that I use AVAST on the thers use a mix of AVG or NOD32. ONLY the box with AVAST is affected. Its just a pain to have to RDP to the other boxes to be able to set up or add router security (block sites or other keywords etc.

A sure fire fix that keeps my antivirus fully operational would be appreciated as the only other way to get it to work when I am using the router is to turn off AVAST (sort of defeats the purpose of having antivirus)
