what have you done to my computer....
« on: July 01, 2009, 12:43:22 AM »
I installed avast pro roughly 4 weeks ago. Since then my PC runs like a heap of junk. At night, usually when im watching BBC iplayer or online TV it seems avast rather conviniently decides to run some sort of background scan that i cannot find any settings for, and i watch in amusement as my Core1/Core2 meter levels in my sidebar go ballistic and hover around 100% for approx. half an hour (usually between 10:30 & 12 midnight).

My PC is a Dell XPS M1710
Vista Home
2.13 Dual Core
2 gig RAM
GeForce Go 7950GTX

Process explorer is throwing up ashSimpl.exe as a major player when CPU is maxed out.

Im on the verge of uninstalling and getting a refund.

None scheduled session is run by default. Did you manually add anything to the scheduler?
Are you referring to an 'i' icon on system tray?
Which was your old antivirus (before avast)?
ashSimpl.exe is the icon on system tray... only, very few CPU should be needed.

not touched it, all i did was install it. ive just had to wait 10 minutes to be able to reply to thisno doubt it will start again soon.

I dont have an "i" icon, only an "a".

old antivirus was a shareware version of avast ive had on for 18 months or so but it ran out so purchased pro.

sorry if i appear to be short im just trying to type as much as pssible before it maxes out again.

shareware version of avast
There's no such thing.
Where did you get it; how did you uninstall it?

There are two basic Avast installations (apart from server/whs/mac etc); Home (free) and pro (pay for.)
Strongly suspect a conflict of some kind with former installed AV.
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

It would have been home then, i disconnect from net, uninstalled it with the uninstall program, ran CCleaner, restart, installed pro.

how can i check if there are remnants of the old version? It expired and stopped working hence the purchase of pro.

Is it worth uninstalling everything to do with avast and starting again?

That's likely to fix the issue.
If your download of the Pro version was from the Avast site (rather than a mirror)  then that file should be fine for the re-install. Otherwise, I don't know for sure, but there is a chance that maybe it's corrupted. If in doubt, grab a new one.
-Download the Avast uninstall utility. Save it to the desktop.
-Disable the Avast self-protection module: Right click the tray icon>program settings>troubleshooting, tick the appropriate box.
-Disconnect from the net.
-Exit Avast (right click tray icon>stop on-access protection).
-Uninstall via the control panel.
-Run the uninstall utility. Reboot if prompted (though I believe this may be unnecessary after the tool is used.)

Any programs you have running that may possibly interfere with the install, such as registry guards and the like, TeaTimer etc, it might pay to disable during the reinstall.
-Install anew. (You may want to skip the boot scan, if you are confident the computer is malware-free.)
-Reconnect. Get updates. Hopefully all will be well.

(You might well have known about these steps; posting just to be sure. It's advice I've found works pretty well.)

Hi 2low  :)

When did you install the BBC iPlayer ?
Was it around the same time as Avast Pro?

Coz...
I don't think Avast is your problem  ???
I think your problem is far more likely to be BBC iPlayer
Do You Know How iPlayer Works?
Unless you've been through all the settings.. And Changed Them!
It's Basically...
Downloading stuff for you.. From other peoples computers  :(
And Also...
Constantly Uploading stuff from your computer...  To other peoples computes  :o

I hope you've got a big Max GB allowance from your ISP  ;D

Hi 2low  :)

I don't actually have BBC iPlayer installed on my computers.
The Reason!
Basically... For the same things that I told you about  :(

However!
I have heard many people saying that the BBC iPlayer has caused them problems.
And if say for instance.. You've only got somethin like a 10GB per month download limit from you ISP
Then that can cause problems for you too  ::)
Coz...
Uploading is still counted in with the Downloading.
And if you think that the BBC iPlayer is constantly Uploading and Downloading ... 10GB aint gonna last long!

Your best bet is to look through the Help within your iPlayer
OR
Have a look at the iPlayer website .. See what it says there  ;)

Basically!
I think you will need to look for something like...
You want to say NO to any Sharing  ;D

Remember!
When talkin about Downloading... It's not just the things you actually click to - Download
It's every website / webpage you visit
Pictures / Ads that you see
Updates for things like Windows and Avast
Basically... Everything that comes in and out from the web  :o
