I'd suggest an external USB or Firewire Harddrive, then use Windows Vista's built-in backup program to schedule backups.  It's free, and very simple to use.  The only problem is that you won't be able to backup exe files and other things that are self-executing.  However, documents and everything can be saved.  Also, entire disk images can be saved as well, so you can restore the entire PC back to how it was when the backup was ran.
For generic computer (not avast) problems, you can also visit my forum for help: http://www.jacobytech.net/forum

I hope what i just gave you help some. that little print i don't know how any one see that it is the tinyies i have ever seen.
till tomorrow
thanks Sharon

What does it say at the front of the drive, where you put the disk in?
The set of numbers/letters suggest that your CD/DVD drive is by Western Digital.
Should be on the computer spec sheet/pamphlet somewhere, if you kept it.

It sounds from the bits you've been able to see as if that is a read/write dvd drive.

The USB drive is any USB port on your computer.

Did you try opening "my computer" to view, as per my picture? What is there?
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

Are you looking at the computer or the DVD's?
This sounds more like a description of a rewritable DVD  not the description of the actual Player.

You can purchase them in any store that carries computer equipment.

DVD RW Drive (E)
DVD Read/Write (Drive E)
Now all you need is to buy some Blank DVD's and start doing your backup using one of
the programs suggested to you.

I already have blank DVD
thanks to every one and I should have look at the user manual before because I found this. just one more question why yesterday was the E drive not there but today it is?                                      .
I red below and it say you have to have a certin kind of disk.

on my disks it's 120min video 4.GB data one the other side of disk it say's DVD-R 1-16 speed do I need to tell every one what is wrote all around the disk? I sure hope this is the kind of disk I need. I said just one more question i was wrong i lost count of how many i just asked every one. one quetion you do not need to answer i reread and yes I do have the right kind of disk.

8 Backup and recovery
Recovering system information
Tools provided by the operating system and Recovery Manager software are designed to help you with
the following tasks for safeguarding your information and restoring it in case of a system failure:
● Backing up your information regularly to protect your important system files.
● Making a set of recovery discs (Recovery Manager software feature). Recovery discs are used to
start up (boot) your computer and restore the operating system and software programs to factory
settings in case of system failure or instability.
● Creating system restore points (operating system feature). System restore points allow you to reverse
undesirable changes to your computer by restoring the computer to an earlier state.
● Recovering a program or driver (Recovery Manager software feature). This feature helps you reinstall
a program or driver without performing a full system recovery.
● Performing a full system recovery (Recovery Manager software feature). With Recovery Manager,
you can recover your full factory image if you experience system failure or instability. Recovery
Manager works from a dedicated recovery partition on the hard drive or from recovery discs you
create.
Creating recovery discs
After setting up the computer for the first time, be sure to create a set of recovery discs of the full factory
image. The recovery discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recover the operating system and
software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure.
NOTE: Handle these discs carefully and keep them in a safe place. The software allows the creation of
only one set of recovery discs.
Note the following guidelines before creating recovery discs:
● Use any of the following types of discs: CD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R or DVD-R DL (purchased
separately). The discs you use will depend on the type of optical drive installed in your computer.
Because DVDs store more information than CDs, DVDs and DVDs with double-layer (DL) support
reduce the number of discs required.
NOTE: Read-write discs, such as CD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW, are not compatible with the
Recovery Manager software.

: The computer must be connected to AC power during this process.
Only one set of recovery discs can be created per computer.
Recovering system information 131} another question it says one time recovery disk I guess that has nothing to do with backing it up. i guss i should do that to but why will it only let you make one? if i make a mistake doing it the 1st time can't try doing it again.
thanks Sharon

Recovery CD's are not the same as a system backup.
Recovery CD's are used to restore the system to the way it was when you first received it from the manufacturer.

I am not sure if this problem as any or if it  is all because of the backup I was trying to do. when I 1st started the backup and I was sure it was putting the 1st backup on a disk because it had to format the disk before it started doing the backup. then it got to the part that it was going to take 2 or 3 hr's to do. I left the computer to do its things. I set in my chair. i had not been getting much sleep and so that is what happen. I was going to check it in an hour but I was out cold. mike came in and wanted to check his mail quick before he had to get back to work. he notice I was doing some thing and saw IT had 100% in stead of hitting finished or what ever should have been click them he closed Every thing I had open by clicking the x then it frozed and would not do any thing. i told him  what i was doing and i don't  know any more then that. i had him click ctrl alt delete a few times to try to get task manager and close the non responding program that way. could not do it. sense there was no other way. i had him try to shut it off by just holding down the on off key. it would not do that. so i tried hitting ctrl alt delete a few times nothing happen i tried the esc witch has never worked for me then i held the on off key for about 30 sec and it went off mike waited 5 min then turn it on it got to the desktop and he went to his ebay it would do nothing so he shut it down the right way waited turn back on and went to a black screen with the little -in the left hand corner blinking and would not do any more. we remember in the 1st week we had the computer about a week and it went to the black screen and 30 min it was still there and hp had mike unplug take the battery out Wait then put the battery back in and now it is working.
i check there is nothing on the disk.  mike said that it said it was 100% complete so  i don't understand why there is nothing on the disk.  a few people here know there has been a little some thing with the computer because i had told them on the nights we shut the computer off at night it would take longer and longer to come all the way back on and a couple of times it had gone to the black screen before. then i tried ctrl alt delete and then click task manager click all the program closed threw it and re start the computer and it work but now this happen i am not sure if thy have any thing to do with each other. any one know whats going on?
thanks Sharon

while I was waiteing for a reply I thought i try to do another backup so I put a disk in and i could not recall how to start.  if i click create a backup image of the entire disk or selected partition(s) when i put the blank disk in it where i want to click in is a grey area witch is clicking to do the backup on a disk.
if i click on auto reply on the E drive you have four to choose from burn a dvd data disk, burn files to disk, burn a dvd video disk and create disk or edit image. i don't remember witch to do. i know you have to fomatt the disk but forgot how to do it.
thanks Sharon

Right. A picture is worth a thousand words. (Hint. Learn to make screenshots.)
Here are 4 pictures showing the steps using Macrium reflect.
Disregard this if you are using the Vista backup utility. Since you didn't say what you were using, I can only guess that this might be useful.
Picture 1: Click at the top right, "disk image", the wizard (pictured centre) will open, click "next.

Picture 2: Shows in this case my two partitions on the same disk. (This configuration varies, computer to computer). I have inserted a tick into both boxes.

Picture 3: Have clicked on "CD/DVD Burner", in order to select that as the backup destination. (This would not work in my case, as the size of the backup exceeds the size of a DVD, but it is to give an idea how to locate where to go.

Picture 4: Self explanatory. Insert a disk. Press OK.
