Which folder to scan?
« on: August 16, 2009, 04:56:55 AM »
Hello avast! users,

What is possibility of a Windows/Linux virus to place itself to a system folder in Ubuntu?
(Do I need to scan system folders or is scanning just home directory enough?)

Thanks.

A windows virus? Zero.

A Linux virus? Depends if you physically give access to your computer and password to a malicious person, or install a malicious program with root privileges.

Read the section called 'Basics' here.

EDIT: Forgot link- see below.

So viruses/trojans coming from malicious websites (e.g. warez etc.) are not important, right?

(I could not find 'Basics' thread, can you give me a link)

Thanks.

Oops, sorry, I forgot the link.

Warez sites are for cracked versions of Windows programs, or keys or keygens for the same, so Trojans and viruses are Windows Trojans and viruses.

Most of the programs you use in Ubuntu will be in the Canonical (Ubuntu) repository and so safe.

If you do download and install Linux programs from other sources, it would be a good idea to scan them if you're not sure of the source.
