XP-Avast (4.8) contradiction
« on: July 03, 2009, 09:12:24 AM »
I've been using Avast Home on my XP desktop happily, but today I installed it on an XP netbook and I get the "Your computer might be at risk" warning.

Windows Security is showing virus protection out of date, citing avast "4.8.1335 [VPS 090607-0] reports that it might be out of date."

I have been updating Avast manually, and it shows "already up to date," with VPS 090702-2 (see the difference in date?) and no amount of reboots can convince XP that all is well. Anything I can do? Thanks in advance,

I ran Repair on Avast, and the problem is solved. Thanks for responses!

  • If at first you don’t succeed; call it version 1.0

Hi Janos.
Firstly, I recommend removing your email address from view. It is likely to be harvested by spammers.

Please check your system time and date are correct.
If so, you might need to reset the security centre.
Quote
1. Go to control panel and open Administrative tools.
2. Click on services.
3. Go down to Windows Management Instrumentation.
4. Stop this service. Stop Security Center service too.
Set them to Automatically start.
5. Exit out of this area, to your desktop.
6. Right click Start, and choose Explore.
7. Go to c:\windows\system32\wbem\repository.
Delete this subdirectory ONLY.
Leave the others there.
8. Exit back to your desktop and reboot your computer (you might need to boot twice).

This will rebuild the deleted folder, and the database.
Once restarted, Windows Security Center should show the correct info.
Antivirus, and firewall, should now be recognized.
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

HI Janos

Is your netbook connected to the internet. Or do you mainly keep it offline, while you use your desktop online?

Thanks for both advices. The discrepancy was solved by doing Repair on Avast. Still don't know why the initial problem, but it's all good now.
